Q. What makes CRYO-LATOR™ Chambers and Kits superior to other “do it yourself” pipe freezing kits on the market?
A. Our CRYO-LATOR™ Chambers and Kit Equipment are fabricated to the very same standards and heavy-duty specifications as used in the field everyday by our service department. Each CRYO-LATOR™ Chamber is individually handcrafted and held to strict quality standards. We offer state of the art equipment developed and used by Pipe Freeze Professionals who depend on their equipment to make the difference between a critical plug failure and the success of the project.
Q. What are frost bands?
A. Shortly after refrigerant has been introduced into the CRYO-LATOR™ Chamber Cavity you will notice frost bands developing on the pipe ODs just outside of the Chamber ends and growing longitudally away from the chamber on both sides.
Q. Should I use temperature-monitoring equipment during the pipe freeze plug process?
A. It is highly recommended that temperature-monitoring equipment be included in the freezing plug process. Not only does it make you look professional, all Professional Pipe Freeze Service providers’ use temperature-monitoring equipment. And for a good reason. This equipment allows you to accurately record and monitor temperatures of the freeze plug as it grows longitudally within the pipe. You maintain a reference database through the complete project and for your future records.
Q. What does the term pressure differential mean during the pipe freeze plug process?
A. The pressure differential is the difference of fluid pressure across the freeze plug. This difference is created between the upstream side or pressurized fluid and the drained / open non-pressurized side of a freeze plug.
Q. How do I confirm that the CRYO-LATOR™ freeze chamber has produced a solid, dependable and workable freeze plug?
A. Professional field technicians in our CRYOSTOP PIPE FREEZE SERVICE division use 3 very important steps to confirm that a freeze plug is set and workable:
1. “Frost Bands” Using the provided timetable estimates you should notice frost bands developing on the pipe just outside of the chamber and growing longitudily away from the chamber on both sides. Using a controlled source to drain the pipe note that the frost bands do not dissipate during the drain down process. If the frost bands remain this is the first of three steps which will confirm that the plug has developed into a solid, dependable and workable freeze plug stop
2. “Temperature-Monitoring Equipment” Temperatures on both side of the chamber will drop dramatically once the LN² refrigerant is feed into the chamber cavity. Depending on the fluid being freeze plugged the idea outer plug temperatures on both sides of the chamber may need to be in the –30F to –70F range. While using a controlled source to drain the pipe fluid note that the temperature readings maintain and or continue to drop and do not increase during the drain down process.
3. “Pressure Differential” Used in conjunction with steps 1 and 2 this is the most positive way to confirm the integrity of a freeze plug. Using a controlled source to drain the pipe fluid note that the calculated amount of fluid has drained from the side to be opened up for work. Once the fluid has ceased to drain through the controlled drain point the plug should be solid, set and workable. However, it is important to confirm and cross check the fluid drain with non-increasing temperature readings and non-decreasing frost bands.
Q. What is a good source to use as a controlled drain on the open side of a freeze plug?
A. Several controlled drain sources can usually be found on the existing piping system to be drained. If available use existing system drain / instrument valves or you may loosen system flange bolts, using the flange as a control point to achieve system drain. If the system to be drained involves a large volume of fluid you may want to contract a vendor to make an adequate sized wet tap to use as a controlled point of drain.
